1st UK Edition. Square 4to. 206pp. Very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscription to front free endpaper, well held in joints and hinges, top edge blue, rest clean. Bound in gilt lettered and decorated blind embossed wide weave blue cloth, featuring seagull to upper, housed and protected in clipped and shelf-dusted original dustwrapper, now covered in transparent removable Mylar wrapper. This Edition is of interest since it is the bowdlerized, censored Edition, wherein the barrack-room slang of the soldiers has been removed and replaced with blanks in the text. The 1973 Edition replaced the offending words. Further, the A/c Ross mentioned is Lawrence himself, a pseudonym assumed when he entered the RAF. When discovered he was discharged but allowed to re-enlist in the Tank Cops under the name of Shaw. The change of names has been attributed to Lawrence's disturbed mental state as a result of his wartime experiences. This book is a great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike.
