Blue cloth with gilt insignias on cover. Tall octavo. 417pp. A unit history of this military organization active during World War I. Its members were recruited early in 1917 by Major-General Leonard Wood (US Army) from the business and professional men of New York City for the purpose of an anti-aircraft defense for New York City after the New York national guard went into federal service. The men of this anti-aircraft unit were transferred to the 9th Coast Artillery Corps of the New York Guard, under the command of Col. John Ross Delafield, and served for many days guarding the agueduct of New York City. This copy has an original vintage photograph of 7 members of the Veteran Corps of Artillery at their post guarding the Croton Aqueduct in Ardsley, NY. There is a handwritten page attached to the photograph identifying the men in the photo, one of whom is the noted portrait painter, Joseph Cummings Chase. A folding map of the Hudson River showing the posts of different units is attached to the book's inside cover. A good copy with some light soiling and wear to the cloth. The spine has some wear to the tips and has a small white shelf number at the bottom. The text is very good with light soiling and wear. There is some foxing and two faintly stamped owner's names to the side edge of the text-block but the pages themselves are unaffected. There is a small stamped owner's name on the flyleaf but no other markings to the text.
