Dumbarton, NH; d. St. Louis, MO. Hoyt was Washington University's (Saint Louis) first chancellor. Previous to that post he had been for 18 years professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Phillips Exeter Academy, in Exeter, New Hampshire.
