[light external soiling and a bit of wear to extremities; jacket has several small chips along top and bottom edges, browned at spine, several tears that are internally tape-repaired]. Novel about a young man and his travails as part of that generation in France who came of age in the decade following World War I -- a "generation which, not old enough by a few years to have taken part in the War, suffered all the spiritual, mental and moral strain of that time." The New York Times critic was unimpressed, likening its protagonist to Julien Sorel (of "The Red and the Black"), deriding him as "one of those thin, dark-eyed, sensitive young men who have been the recurrent concern of French novelists since Stendahl." The book itself, he stated, was "hesitant and groping. There is no plot. There are merely a series of incidents, [which] all go to show the culmination of doubt and spiritual distress in his heart." This was the author's first novel, published in France in 1928 as "L'âme obscure" (which translates as "The Dark Soul"); he had begun his literary career with a 1926 essay entitled "Notre inquià tude" ("Our Anxiety"), which took as its theme "humanity's loss of meaning and direction in an increasingly industrialized and mechanized world" (Wikipedia). Raised a Roman Catholic, he had returned to the religion after a period of agnosticism in the 1920s, and from the early 1930s onward most of his writings concerned Catholicism.…

Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. We grade our books conservatively (Fine being our highest grade, used only for books with no discernible flaws) and package them liberally: most hardcover books are sent in boxes, securely wrapped and cushioned, and with the dust jacket (if present) protected by a new mylar cover. We provide a concise, accurate description of the condition of every book (and a scanned image of the actual book on offer); please get in touch by email if you need additional information. All books are returnable for a full refund if not A-OK.
Shipping terms
We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book. Our first priority always is TOP-QUALITY PACKAGING, for MAXIMUM PROTECTION of your book, and we will never compromise on this point.
