This SCARCE thesis is based on a combination of primary and secondary material and includes six hours of taped memoirs recorded by Galleghan in retirement. In the footnotes these are referred to as 'The Galleghan Tapes'. Additionally all Galleghan's surviving officers(and some of his NCOs and men) were contacted by the writer. Most responded positively - though not necessarily flatteringly - to an interview or questionnaire regarding their former CO. In general terms this thesis concluded that Galleghan's reputation as a soldier is overrated and that he and S. F. Arneil (a former 2/30th NCO) are primarily responsible for this mythology.
