With an introductory epistle signed Cutchbert Clutterbuck and an answer by "the author of Waverley". Set in the Scottish Borders in the sixteenth century on the eve of the Reformation, it centres Melrose Abbey.The Abbot, complete in three volumes. The first edition, first issue, Edinburgh edition. Sequel toThe Monastery, following events up until the escape of Mary, Queen of Scots from Lochleven Castle and her defeat at the Battle of Langside.The Talisman, vols. III and IV of the 'Tales of the Crusaders' which appeared in four volumes. This complete in itself. A scarce first edition of this work, only followed by a revised 'Magnum' edition in 1832. Preceded by The Betrothed. Set during the crusades.The Fortunes of Nigel, vol. III of three. The first edition. Set in seventeenth century London, evolving around the Scottish community after the Union of the Crowns. Featuring James VI and I. Rebound in uniform half calf bindings over marbled boards, renewed endpapers. Externally generally smart with minor shelf wear, minor rubbing to extremities of boards and spine, spine lightly sunned. Robert M J Cottingham ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor faint spotting scattered to leaves. Very Good.
