About this Item
Octavo, 337pp., plus advertisements. A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth. A few internal signatures partly loosened, but intact. Contents otherwise crisp, clean and bright. Pencilled owner's name on the front free endpaper. This is the first issue, with the *spoiler alert!* main character's suicide by gunshot on pp. 335-6. John Hay rightly surmised that the money-grubbing antagonist in the novel was based on his father-in-law Amasa Stone, and he bought up every copy he could, finally suing Appleton to suppress the book. Appleton reprinted it with a less-gruesome ending. Seller Inventory # 9300
