From the editor's preface: "In my current position, directing a salmon habitat research program in the Pacific Northwest, I am frequently reminded of the need for guidance on the monitoring of restoration actions and occasionally I am presented with opportunities to provide such guidance. In 1999 my employer, the U.S. government, asked me if our researchers could develop guidance on how to monitor and evaluate restoration actions for threatened and endangered salmon. I saw the opportunity to fill a long-standing need; however, a number of financial and political hurdles ultimately prevented us from initiating the project. Realizing that our initial efforts perhaps had larger significance, I proposed to the American Fisheries Society a more general book on the topic of monitoring stream and watershed restoration.
