About this Item
A scarce copy of the first edition of Hunt's delightful work on the months of the year. James Henry Leigh Hunt (October 19, 1784 August 28, 1859) was an English essayist, poet and writer. Leigh Hunt was educated at Christ's Hospital, a period which is detailed in his autobiography. As a boy, he was an ardent admirer of Thomas Gray and William Collins, writing many verses in imitation of them. A speech impediment, later cured, prevented his going to university. "For some time after I left school," he says, "I did nothing but visit my school-fellows, haunt the book-stalls and write verses." His poems were published in 1801 under the title of Juvenilia, and introduced him into literary and theatrical society. He began to write for the newspapers, and published in 1807 a volume of theatre criticism, and a series of Classic Tales with critical essays on the authors. Full speckled calf leather binding with gilt detail and titles to spine. There is some minor wear to the extremities including a small chip with loss to the top of the spine and a couple of very mild marks in the leather on the rear board. The front inner hinge is strained and the front outer hinge is starting to crack however and the front board if holding by the cords only. The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from scattered spotting in places. There is the occasional handling mark. There is an armorial plate to the front pastedown. Very Good. Seller Inventory # LTH3-C-13
