About this Item
12mo., blue cloth spine-lettered in silver; unclipped pictorial dust jacket, slight edge-wear. First edition, first state with period between "talk" and "this" (page 112, line 11) and without printer's name on copyright page. Goldstone A16.b; Harmon 31c. From the library of Philip C. Jessup, with the veteran U.S. diplomat's ownership signature on the front endpaper. ----- Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. A lovely copy of a Steinbeck masterpiece with a distinguished provenance. Seller Inventory # ABE-16338116702
