About this Item
A strong Good, touching on Very Good. See scans. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1915. First Edition.12mo, 352 pp. Blue cloth, silver device and imprinting. A bit soiled, several handwritten marks on the front endpapers, light corner and spine-end wear. Good plus to about very good. Silver still bright, no spine fade. A curious novel of Russian royalty, particularly one Piotr, by an author who "for political and other reasons" remained anonymous. It is known to be the work of the same anonymous creator of a number of other works, many about royalty, including The Martyrdom of an Empress, A Doffed Coronet, The Cradle of the Rose, The Tribulations of a Princess, and others. Probably, in fact, all authored by a bashful Marguerite de Godart Cunliffe-Owen; a copy of The Martyrdom of an Empress was inscribed and signed by her. The consensus appears to be that this is inconclusive, but, hey, it was her. Another clue: the author of that title is described as "an Officier de l'ordre de l'instruction Publique de France." Scarce, probably the rarest of Cunliffe-Owen's titles. See scans. Scarce First Edition. L17n. Seller Inventory # 000360
