8vo. Pp. 320. Bound in green cloth with light green lettering stamped on front board and spine. Slight spotting to front board, edges a bit thumbed. In the illustrated dust jacket that shows light soiling and a dampstain on the front panel. A presentable copy. First edition of Locke's novel of WWI, adapted by Lasky and Zukor into the 1924 silent film The Side Show of Life. That was long considered a lost film until a print was discovered in Moscow's Gosfilmofond. The charming dust jacket illustration by "PC" depicts a beleaguered clown taking stock of himself as reflected in a mirror. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
