Item description from seller

Trade style paper-back with pictorial card cover. Rubbing to edges. Block edges are spotted. Generally clean and tidy, and firm. A scarce book, s sharp critique and realistic satire of the "Kailyard" school of Scottish literature—challenging the overly sentimental and idealized portrayal of Scottish rural life found in popular novels of the era. It is frequently cited in the Dictionary of the Scots Language (DSL) as a primary reference source for historic Scots vocabulary, regional idioms, and pronunciation (such as words like scootmagroo, unction, and local dialect variants of water). The illustration to the cover is an early work by the renowned Scottish artist Joseph W Simpson. 128 pages, plus advertisements.

Store description

I am a small Independent Bookseller with 35 years experience. My main field of interest is Social Military and Maritime History and Mountaineering although I am always on the lookout for the strange and unusual. I have been a member of Abebooks for many years but due to ill health have not been part of the market place for some time. I do however buy from Abebooks on a regular basis on behalf of Bookpoint in Dunoon. I have always been well known for my accurate descriptions and prompt delivery service. If anyone is looking for Maritime or Scottish History please do not hesitate to contact me.…
