About this Item
The first edition of this touching tribute work for the excavator Francis Giesler Newton, published after his death, illustrated throughout, including with folding and colout plates. The first edition of this work. Illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece, and twenty-one plates, two of which are folding, eight of which are in colour, and eleven monochrome plates. Collated, complete. A memorial work for Francis Giesler Newton, who died in 1924. Newton was a British architect and excavator, working on the EES expedition to El-Amarna, assisting in the excavation and in the making of plans for the new city. Amarna is an extensive Egyptian archaeological site, the remains of the capital city built by Pharaoh Akhenaten of the late Eighteenth Dynasty. Edited by Henri Frankfort, a Dutch Egyptologist, archaeologist, and orientalist. With contributions by N. de Garis Davies, H. Frankfort, S. R. K. Glanville, and T. Whittemore. Illustrated with plates by Francis G. Newton, Nina de G. Davies, and N. de Garis Davies. In a half cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Lifting to the tail of the spine. Some loss to the cloth to the spine and joints. Light marks to the boards and spine. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting a little but remains firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Good. Seller Inventory # 698P22
