About this Item

Now that you've finished reading the title I can tell you that this is a very rare book. And a First Edition (SD). You can see the covers in the photos. They feel like a lightly pebbled leather. They are quite clean with only a few light spots. The mustard-colored label on the spine is in pretty decent shape. It has two small abrasions or scuffs obstructing the view of the 'Y' and second 'C' in Cyclopedia. There is no loss and no tearing on the label. There's a tiny tear at both spine ends, also a little crinkling and speck-sized loss. The six edges of the book are in very good shape. Each of the four corners has only a small spot of rub-through. The page edges are for the most part clean. The middle page edge has four very small spots. These spots have had minimum impact on the pages, a number of them have a bit of a spot (1/16th") just peeking over their outer edge. The book is pretty square and it is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues with this 1834 book. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. There is a very tiny water stain on both sides of the juncture between the first five pages. It's so tiny that it doesn't even reach the print on either side which begins fairly close to the juncture. This little water stain disappears after these first five pages and there are no other water stains to be found anywhere in the book. In scrolling through the rest of the pages I actually came upon only four small spots of soiling. I also saw a few specks. I may have missed a few inconspicuous spots but it is very clear that these pages are very clean. Even the inside covers and end papers are clean. Also, quite significantly, there is no foxing in this-- let me repeat-- 1834 book. The pages are also in very good condition. I found two consecutive pages with the same tiny loss off their bottom edge, very far from the print. One also had a thin light crease. I saw two pages that had a very tiny tear off their outer edge, again very far from the print. I saw two or three tip of the bottom corner creases. I saw two consecutive pages with the second one having pulled off a tiny bit of the first ones paper onto its own outer edge, we're talking about maybe a 1/16th of an inch. I didn't see any turned-down corner creases or placeholder creases, really no conspicuous creasing at all. Nor are there any markings and there are no attachments of any kind. Finally, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. This book was prepared under the supervision of Lowell Mason who also in a two page Recommendations section praised the author for his "correct science, taste and judgment. He has produced a book at once interesting and amusing, instructive and useful". G. J. Webb also commends the book: 'I regard the book as a highly useful one, and containing a much larger mass of information on the subject of music, than any book of the same compass in the English language.' The book runs 432 pages. This book sold in auction in 1976. The inflation-adjusted price would be $248.00. The condition of that book is not rated or described beside a reference to chipping of the label.
