This copy is new. Based on the wartime diary of the author's father, Philip Alfred Poole, this memoir follows a young New Zealand soldier conscripted during the First World War. A talented violinist as well as a trained machine gunner, Poole performed aboard his troopship and at Sling Camp while preparing for service in France. His experiences include the Spanish influenza outbreak at sea, a German submarine attack, military training in England and a poignant visit to his family's ancestral home in Shropshire. The book contrasts the demands of soldiering with Poole's enduring passion for music.
