Jefferson Farjeon (18831955) was an English crime and mystery writer whose work peaked during the golden age of detective fiction. Born Joseph Jefferson Farjeon in London into a literary familyhis father, Benjamin, was a novelist and his sister, Eleanor, a renowned children's authorhe displayed an early flair for storytelling and puzzle construction. Over a prolific career, he produced more than sixty novels, along with plays and short stories, and is best remembered for his skillful plotting and ability to evoke a palpable sense of suspense. Although his popularity waned somewhat after the Second World War, contemporary reissues have renewed interest in his work, securing his place among the notable contributors to interwar British crime writing. The Mystery on the Moor, first published in the 1930s, exemplifies Farjeon's atmospheric style and penchant for enclosed, uneasy settings. Set against the forbidding backdrop of a mist-shrouded moor, the story begins with a mysterious disappearance that propels a cast of complex characters into suspicion and hidden motives. Farjeon deftly builds tension through a series of chance encounters and cryptic clues, drawing the reader into a puzzle that hinges on both psychology and environment. While the pacing reflects the period's more measured approach to unravelling a crime, the gradual accumulation of secrets and the eerie ambience of the landscape keep the stakes high. Fans of golden age mysteries will appreciate Farjeon's careful structuring, revealing twists in a manner that rewards those who follow every small detail. ; 19.5 x 13.5 x 3.5 cms; 251 pages.
