First Edition (first printing). 8vo. xv, 405pp + [ii] publisher's advertisements. Handsome gilt lettered and decorated blue cloth. Top edge gilt, others rough-trimmed. The title page printed in black and burgundy. With a frontispiece and sixty-three plates of black and white illustrations (including works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Frank T. Merrill, Robert Engels, Willy Pogány, Gertrude Demain Hammond, Julius Jürss, Evelyn Paul, and others). The cloth gilt fractionally flecked in one or two tiny areas, and with a touch of wear to the backstrip ends and corner tips. A small splash of miscellaneous staining to the head of the rear board. Some toning to the free endpapers, and a neatly inked name and date of a contemporary former owner. A very good copy of this exegesis on medieval grimoire. Includes chapters on Beowulf, Gudrun, Reynard the Fox, The Nibelungenlied, Dietrich von Bern, Charlemagne and his Paladins, Huon of Bordeaux, Titurel and the Holy Grail, Merlin, The Round Table, Tristan & Iseult, &c. Uncommon in this first edition state.
