Kimball's account of the battles fought by the United States Navy, from its inception to the War of 1812 -- tactics, strategies, and outcomes of many battles, as well as the key figures involved. The book also includes biographical sketches of notable naval officers and descriptions of the ships and weapons used in the battles. Engraved plates attributed to M. Corne, P. Maverick, Read, etc. The plates engraved by Peter Maverick and one by Read are "Printed by Saml. Maverick, N.Y." In addition to the engravings called for in the table of contents, there are twelve wood engravings bound in at the end of the text, including 'President and Plantagenet,' 'Constitution and Java,' 'Constitution's Escape from Tenedos and Endymion,' 'Hornet and Penguin,' 'Wasp and Frolic,' 'Hornet and Peacock,' 'Constitution and Guerriere,' 'Constitution,Cyane and Levant,' 'Essex and Alert,' 'Chesapeake and Shannon,' 'Enterprise and Boxer,' 'Hornet Blockading the Bonne Citoyenne.' Quite scarce in this original first edition with the additional 12 wood cut plates. Howes K135 Shaw & Shoemaker 36781 Stephens (The Mavericks) lists the two Maverick views of the Battle of Lake Erie (773 & 774).
