By Austin J. [James] Small Garden City, New York: Published for the Crime Club, Inc., by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1929. First American edition, first printing. "First edition" statement to the copyright page, 1929 date to the title page. Detective Proctor is featured in this mystery that involves the docks and their ships, a variety of Chinese characters, and Chinese sections of London. Posthumously first published in the U.K. as DOWN RIVER, and adapted to the Peter Godfrey directed 1931 film starring Charles Laughton, Jane Baxter and Harold Huth. Light rubbing to the upper and lower spine edges and corner tips, else very good to near fine in black linen with red titles to the front cover and to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.
