165 x 105 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/8"). xliii, [1], 1-406, 411-420 pp. Lacking two leaves of the index. Contemporary black half calf over marbled paper boards, flat spine with gilt rules, lettered in gilt. Contemporary ink corrections and additions to table of contents, a few ink notations in the text. Oxford, p. 37. General minor wear (chafing, rubbing, etc.) to the binding, but the volume entirely solid. First third of the book with light foxing (a few leaves more noticeably foxed), other trivial defects, but generally very good internally, with little of the soiling that often plagues cookery books. This early 19th recipe book demonstrates the full range of recipes that, in the subtitle's words, are deemed to be "truly valuable. . . in various branches of domestic economy." Extending a considerable distance beyond cookery, the book includes medicines, pest control, and cleaning agents, along with agricultural advice, instructions for constructing emergency flotation devices (p. 272), how to make "Transparent Screens for the Exhibition of the Phantasmagoria" (p. 257), and even preparing explosives ("thunder powder," p. 381), purifying muddy water, and improving the performance of corks. And much more. Oxford attributes this book to Maria Rundell, who had written the hugely popular cookbook "A New System of Domestic Cookery," although this attribution is now often deemed dubious. Our copy is pleasantly clean for a book expected to see heavy use in the kitchen and workshop. Seller Inventory # ST20911-4
