About this Item
First edition. 8" x 5 1/2" in original brown cloth stamped in gilt. dark brown front and rear endpapers, 180 pp., dedication, preface. Journalist from Trenton who lost his money when the Northern Pacific went bankrupt, left for Michigan Nov. 13, 1871, and arrived in Chicago just after the great fire. Begins with the train ride to Chicago, where "we reached the charred ruins of the City of Divorces," wandered for hours through miles of devastation, went on to Milwaukee where business was doubled due to Chicago's fire, then by steamer to Grand Haven and on to his cabin north of Muskegon in Oceana County. Talks of Indians, lumber, life in the woods. Fine, bright, square copy. Quite a nice copy, tight and unused. Seller Inventory # 38824
