FIRST EDITION (1947), slim folio, 335 x 225 mm, 13 x 9¼ inches, original publisher's pictorial colour illustrated boards, 35 pages. 40 coloured illustrations in chalk and line, text in cursive script by the artist. No inscriptions, edges of boards very slightly faded, head and tail of spine very slightly worn, corners just very slightly rubbed, endpapers very slightly age-browned, 5 mm (¼") closed tear to 1 lower margin (repaired). Contents very nice. DUSTWRAPPER: faint foxing all over, 5 mm (¼") missing at head of spine, 10 mm (½") chip to top edge of upper panel next to spine, several small closed edge tears, corners slightly chipped. A very good copy in very good DUSTWRAPPER (not price clipped). In his first Preliminary Hand-List of Ardizzone's books Brian Alderson dated this work (1947), but he has revised this to (1948) in his recent full length Bibliography, pages 54 and 59, No.23.1.
