About this Item
A first printing of the first UK paperback edition, published by Corgi Books [FG7232]. First published in the UK in hardback in 1964 by Michael Joseph. ***A very good copy in illustrated card wrappers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are quite clean. There is some creasing at the edges and corners, and quite a lot of rubbing and scuffing at the edges, especially on the spine which also has some light reading creases. There is no lean to the binding which is straight. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with a neat contemporary ownership name and date, and a small ink stamp, to the front free endpaper. There are no serious creases or tears. The paper stock has tanned with age. No foxing. ***189 pages plus publisher's catalogue at the rear. 182mm x 111mm. ***'This collection of James Baldwin's writing includes his controversial profiles of Norman Mailer, Richard Wright, and Ingmar Bergman, as well as his vigorous attack on Faulkner's defence of the old South. The question of colour takes up much space, as does the relation between blacks and whites, the role of the Negro in America and Europe, the question of sexual identity and the facing of truth about oneself and others.' [Quote taken from the back cover] ***A first printing of the first UK paperback edition in very good original condition. This Corgi edition is surprisingly uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # PB352
