620p. Ex-library hardcover book bound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Spine has been rebacked, retaining much of the original leather. Edges heavily scuffed. Library stamps inside. All pages tanned and slightly brittle with age. Scattered pencil marks in text; spotty ink stains on pages 460-461. Most pages clean, and binding tight. Acceptable reading condition. Volume 138 of THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, the first literary journal in the United States. This volume contains all monthly issues from January through June 1884. Some notable features include a statistical study of immigration's impact on crime and dependence on welfare ("Evils Incident to Immigration" by Edward Self); a positive asessment of the legacy of the abolitionist John Brown ("John Brown's Place in History" by J.J.
