[xvi]+224, engraved emblematic title page, hand coloured in part, numerous text figures (many geometrical), a few decorative head & tailpieces and initials, several tables; narrow med. 4to; early marbled papered boards, neatly rebacked with a later calf spine ruled in gilt, with [earlier?] gilt lettered red leather title label, the boards lightly rubbed, edges slightly worn, the fore-corner tips reinforced with calf, slightly chipped at bottom fore-corner of upper board; later endpapers, book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper pastedown, three different early inked signatures (two on blank preliminary leaf, one at head of title page), small inked number on verso of title page, short closed tear to bottom margin pages 191/2, a few light marginal damp stains; Elsevier, Leiden, [Holland], 1645. First French edition. *Originally published in Latin in 1642, also by the Elseviers. Nicolaus Goldmann (1611-1665) was a German mathematician and architectural theorist who spent most of his working life at Leiden. This volume, which is dedicated to Frederick Hendrik (1584-1647), Prince of Orange, contains instructions for the design of fortifications and is profusely illustrated with plans, profiles and perspective views. The emblematic portion of the title page has been hand-coloured; the lower third, depicting a fortified town, remains uncoloured.
