Reviews
Patmore deals with dogs of all ages, providing well-written chapters on feeding, health management, training, sex, and social life that are appropriate for each age. Unfortunately, what could have been an outstanding book is weakened by the sections on homeopathy and herbal medicine by veterinarian Tim Couzens. Although the reader is frequently cautioned to be certain of the diagnosis and to consult a veterinarian when in doubt or when a treatment is ineffective, some of the homeopathic agents recommended, e.g., mercury, lead, and hydrofluoric acid, could actually make a condition much worse. Herbal remedies are effective in some cases and harmless in most; in the latter case, however, delay in obtaining proper treatment could aggravate the problem. An optional purchase that is recommended with reservations.
