The uncommon first edition of this work from important nineteenth century ethnologist and physician James Cowles Prichard.In this work, Prichard expressed his views about the 'specific unity of man' - or monogenism - and his belief that the same inward nature can be recognised within all races, and that we all descend from a common ancestor. In part due to his view, Prichard was an early member of the Aborigines' Protection Society.Illustrated with thirty-six hand coloured plates - including a frontispiece - and with five steel engraved plates.
