[Needlepoint Binding] Blank Custom Notebook Belonging to Gustav Kirchhoff

Unused notebook belonging to the prominent German physicist Gustav Kirchhoff, his name in gilt to front free endpaper. 72 blank leaves. Duodecimo, bound in gilt-tooled green morocco framing cross-stitch floral designs, all edges gilt. Morocco pencil loops, cream silk endpapers with silk morocco-tipped pocket to each pastedown. Near Fine with light wear to covers, stray pencil mark to front free endpaper, and foxing to endpapers, first and last few pages, and cloth below needlework. A lovely little book, possibly a gift from Kirchhoff's daughter Eveline, whose initials are marked on the front cover. Cross-stitch and embroidery were standard skills for young ladies like Eveline, who was still a teenager when her father died in 1887, and personalized gifts were prized in the 19th century.
