Roe's anti-Catholic novel.A melodramatic novel published in St. Louis in the 1890s, which includes the production of a play based on scenes from the Bible, titled 'Nehushtan', after the bronze image of a serpent on a pole described in the Book of Numbers.This work is notable for the gilt image to the front board depicting a column of soldiers bearing the banner of the American Patriotic Association, approaching a man who is chopping down a tree from which flies an American flag.Observing this scene is the Pope, who has a a skull-and-crossbones on his vestments.The American Protective Association was an American anti-Catholic secret society established in 1887 by Protestants. The organization was the largest anti-Catholic movement in the United States during the later part of the 19th century, showing particular regional strength in the Midwest.
