Item description from seller

The Nervous System and Its Constituent Neurones (1899) by Lewellys F. Barker is one of the foundational anatomical and neurological monographs of the late 19th century, produced at Johns Hopkins during the period when the neuron doctrine was still being established. This landmark text synthesizes the work of His, Golgi, Forel, Ramà n y Cajal, and others, offering one of the earliest comprehensive overviews of the microscopic anatomy of the nervous system. The book includes 676 detailed in-text illustrationsâ"many based on Golgi and Cajal preparationsâ"along with two color plates, making it hugely important for historians of neurology, pathology, and medical illustration. The contents span the development of the neurone concept, external and internal morphology, dendritic processes, axis-cylinders, collaterals, and the organization and chaining of the neurones within the spinal cord and brainstem. This volume became a standard reference for both students and practitioners of medicine at the turn of the century, and was particularly influential in spreading the neuron doctrine throughout American medical schools. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in the publisherâs original dark green cloth with gilt spine title. The boards show noticeable wear, rubbing, and scattered spotting; edges and corners bumped, with fraying and small losses at spine ends. Hinges cracked with some looseness but text block still attached. Interior pages remain clean and legible, with only light toning appropriate for 1899; illustrations are crisp. Old ownership names and penciled notes to front endpaper. Overall- good.
