Item description from seller

A massive three-volume reference work that serves as a comprehensive dictionary of proper names. It was designed as a major update and expansion of the earlier Century Cyclopedia of Names (1894). The goal was to provide concise, authoritative information on proper names of significance in the English-speaking world ? from ancient times to the mid-20th century. A staff of more than 350 consulting scholars, special editor, and other contributors worked to produce this set. The encyclopedia includes entries on: - People (historical figures, contemporary notables, biblical characters, mythological figures).- Places (cities, countries, mountains, rivers, etc.).- Events (wars, treaties, battles, historical movements).- Literary & Cultural References (books, plays, operas, fictional characters, works of art).- Organizations, Institutions, and Other Proper Names (newspapers, political parties, ships, holidays, etc.).ABOUT THIS SET: This matching three volume set is bound in burgundy cloth with gilt lettering and ornamentation on the covers, with blind embossed ornamentation bordering the title. Dual columned. On a shelf, this set spans 7.5 inches. Volume One: A - Emin Pasha. xxvi, 1440 pp.Volume Two: Em'ly - Nakuru. xxvi, 2880 pp. Volume Three: Nala - Zyryanians. xxvi, 4342 pp.CONDITION: Ex-library, this had been a reference set for several institutions: The US Air Force, Base Library in Wilmington, Delaware; and Florida Bible College. Store description

Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville). We are primarily an online bookstore, but we invite you to make an appointment for an on-site visit! Shelley and Son Books is owned by Stan Shelley.
