First edition, second issue. Engraved title-page, Index leaf, 60 hand-colored engraved maps after Young & Delleker. 1 vols. 4to. A copy of the first edition, second issue, of this important atlas, from one of the greatest American map publishers of the period. A review of this work in the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW for July 1824 (pp.261-262) states:|"The number of elegant maps and atlases which have come from the press within a short time in the United States, is a most flattering proof of increased attention of the community to the important study of geography. The present work contains sixty maps, about half of which are devoted to the American continent, and the remainder to other parts of the world, chiefly to Europe. The engraving is done almost uniformly with remarkable distinctness and the face of the maps is frequently beautiful, not overloaded with a confusion of useless names." According to Rumsey, there are a number of points which separate the first and second issues of the first edition. The most obvious are on the engraved index leaf: the Eastern Hemisphere is listed as number 1 in the first issue and number 2 in the second; in the first issue number 11 is Connecticut and number 12 is Rhode Island; in the second issue number 11 is Rhode Island and number 12 is Connecticut. Little is known of Anthony Finley other than his published work, "but he was probably born around 1790. Judging from contributors to his atlases, he apparently moved in the same Philadelphia circles of engravers and compilers as other contemporary publishers" (Ristow). Ristow, pages 268-269; Phillips Atlases 4314 Contemporary half roan and marbled paper covered boards, publisher's label on the upper cover, rebacked. Tear to map of Turkey. Provenance: General Theological Seminary (perforated stamp on each map, other markings) Engraved title-page, Index leaf, 60 hand-colored engraved maps after Young & Delleker. 1 vols. 4to.…
