Original half goat and paper designed by Lovat Fraser over boards, title in gilt to spine, t.e.g., with the matching portfolio with five full sheets of Curwen pattern papers, both housed in the original slipcase. Spine very slightly faded, very minor rubbing to extremities, otherwise bright and clean, portfolio spine lightly browned, slipcase with some discolouring towards entry point of lower panel. One of the extra sheets of paper has a crease. With thirty-two paper samples tipped in, and five full sheets in the portfolio. Number IX of eighty-five copies bound thus, with another two hundred and fifty bound in quarter buckram. "This book came about through the discovery by Hans Schmoller of a collection of Curwen pattern papers in the possession of Robert Simon, the nephew of Oliver Simon of Curwen Press fame . This discovery provided a unique opportunity to publish a description of the papers, together with tipped-in samples of a representative selection" (Butcher, 'The Whittington Press, A Bibliography 1982-93', page 90). Original quarter goatskin over Curwen pattern paper designed by Claude Lovat Fraser, spine lettered in gilt, with the separate portfolio covered in the same paper, all contained within a green paper covered box. Fine, the slightest of rubbing to corners, slight fading to spine and a little offsetting to the portfolio where it has contacted the goatskin. Glocestershire, Whittington Press. Including Paul Nash's original introduction to the 1928 sampler of pattern papers from the Curwen Press and an introduction and short history of the press by David McKitterick.
