Folio, 35x24 cm. One volume bound in two, with no title page in the second volume. Early (19th century?) 1/2 calf with marbled boards with morocco spine labels, some rubbing and wear but generally quite good. 704, xii, [4] pp., with 60 uncolored full page plates depicting religious rites around the world. Internally very good, with two small library number stamps and repairs to the frontispiece illustration. This appears to be the first edition, as a New Edition is announced on the last page of the list of subscribers, but this issue is not designated as the New Edition which was published within a few years of the first edition. The wonderful plates depict practices, such as cannibalism, of obscure religions along with major ones. Along with chapters on European religions, there are also sections on the religions of India, Persia, Africa, the Caribbean, Florida, South America, etc. Published by Alexander Hogg.
