About this Item
[a good sound copy, modestly shelfworn, with some dust-soiling to the top of the text block and some faint staining on all edges, very slight bumping to the lower corners, tiny rip in cloth at top of spine; the street map of Manhattan in the rear pocket is present and in excellent condition; the jacket, although substantially complete, is a bit of a mess -- stretched and soiled, with various tears, some paper loss at the spine ends and several corners, etc.]. (American Guide Series) Series (B&W photographs, prints, maps) "A Comprehensive Guide to the Five Boroughs of the Metropolis -- Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Richmond," with the usual rich mix of historical, cultural, commercial and tourist information that typified the American Guide Series. Unusually for the series, this volume is illustrated not only with many black-and-white photographs, but also several dozen reproductions of art works (by Reginald Marsh, Mabel Dwight, Don Freeman, Louis Lozowick, and others) depicting various NYC scenes. Although the specific printing of this copy is not identified, it lacks the 23-page supplemental section devoted to the 1939 New York World's Fair that was incorporated in the first printing (although a reference to it survives in the index). Usually the second printing is identified as having a gray binding; this printing, however, has a navy blue binding, with an embossed spine panel reading simply "New York City Guide / Random House," and the front cover completely free of any lettering (unlike the first printing, which although it had the same color, also had the title in gilt lettering on the front cover and "Federal Writers' Project" in smaller lettering beneath); the unclipped jacket bears a $3.00 printed price. Bibliography, index. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** NOISBN.
