Item description from seller

A scarce first edition of this examination of the author's life in London and the city's vivid nightlife. First edition. Scarce. A memoir of the author's own experiences living in Victorian London and exploring the underworld of the city at night. With details of the mysterious and intriguing sights discovered after venturing down shady alleys and interactions with the characters who appear there. Written by James Ewing Ritchie, an English journalist and writer known for his travel books and political biographies. In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine resulting in minor loss. Front hinge starting but firm, rear hinge tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown and page one. With the bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. Good. …
