About this Item
(London: Digby, Long & c., Publishers nd [1893]). First UK Edition First Issue. Publisher's dark-green boards with gilt lettering to the spine, black lettering to the front board and publisher's initials in black to the rear board. Patterned end-papers based on the publisher's initials. A bright and attractive VG+ copy (boards dust-dulled, top edge a little dusty, base of spine slightly pushed in causing a solitary "wear hole" approx 1mm in height X 3mm across). A sound and sturdy copy without any sun-fading to the spine and with firm hinges. There is a lengthy inscription starting at the top of the title page "To F.W. Rudler Esq, F.G.S. etc. etc. With kind regards from William H. Gofs" which continues (in the same script) below the author's name "the wife of Major William Anderson, who is nephew of the late General Gordon, and son of Wilhelmina Harriet, nee of Gordon". Frederick William Rudler (1840-1915) was an English mineralogist, geologist, anthropologist, and natural scientist. From the Spectator Review of the 5th August 1893: "This is a tale of the world before the Flood. When the story of the Bible is decked out with a number of accessories, not a few difficulties present themselves, What, for instance, became of the "daughters of Noah," of whom we hear in the course of this tale? The story is told by one Tirzah, who is wooed by Sham, but loves one of the fighting-men of the giants. Fighting there is of course in abundance ; and a novel touch of terror is added by the appearance of the " Maktar," a creature which we are instructed to identify with the Pterodactyl". Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490723289
