Title-page of the Nomenclator expertly washed and two tears of it neatly repaired without loss of text, otherwise a fine copy of Gesner's very rare collected Icones animalium. 4 volumi in- folio riuniti in piena pelle coeva, dorso restaurato, tassello dorato conservato, angoli abilmente riparati. (xxiii), 374, (2) pp., 700 illustrazioni incise in legno; 127, (9) pp., 141 illustrazioni; 137, (11) pp., 220 illustrazioni. Titolo del Nomenclator lavato e collato, con due strappi marginali finemente restaurati: in complesso, bell' esemplare dell' iconografia completa della monumentale opera del Gessner, il primo trattato generale della storia degli animali. Nell' opera i vari animali sono indicati in ordine alfabetico, analogamente alla Historia naturalis di Plinio, mentre di ciascun animale vengono descritti comportamento, utilizzazione alimentare ed eventuale utilità medica. L' opera che più di due secoli dopo la sua pubblicazione destava ancora l' interesse di zoologi come il Cuvier, si avvaleva per la parte iconografica, oltre che delle illustrazioni del Gessner, anche di quelle fornite da vari artisti (tra questi). They are much more rare than the complete edition" (Wood, Literature of vertebrate zoology, p. 356). "In Gessner we find some of the earliest true animal art. His folios were illustrated with woodcuts of remarkable quality. The artist was, in all probability, Lucas Schan of Strasbourg, and the engraver was probably Franz Oberreiter of the same city. Despite the lack of color, and despite the same technical problems imposed by grain of wood, Schan and Oberreiter created figures that certainly qualify as serious, and successful, scientific draftsmanship."
