259 pp. Frontis portrait of "Stanley". Diary of a woman who adopts (with her husband) a 5-year-old orphan boy whose "parents had been working people, but not dissipated". Quite touching, and a window into attitudes of a 100 years ago. Presumed 1st, very scarce. Black cloth with brilliant gilt on the spine with a wonderful Art- Nouveau-ish decorating, spine gilt bright, spine tips a little rubbed and chipped. Interior front hinge just starting to crack, old institutional library marks, frontis tissue present and only a little foxed, gilt top edges. Handsome book, hard to find.; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
