Before they were printed in France, however, a series on blood . . . was published in English in the United States, with Bernard's permission, from notes taken by a young American physician, Walter F. Atlee. The close relation of Bernard's lectures to his researches is illustrated by accounts of the production of sugar in the liver and the recent experiments on the sympathetic nerve. . . . Atlee's edition of the lectures On the Blood perhaps comes closest to a reproduction of what actually went on in the lecture room.
