Add to basketThe publishers set out to combine what they thought were the best writings about Niagara with the best renderings in art of this phenomenon, as noted in the Preface: "We have endeavored to make the work beautiful and attractive, gathering in one volume the best works of eloquent pens and happiest conceptions of thorough artists." As they did, I will leave it to you to decide whether they achieved their goal. This large folio album about Niagara (and not just the Falls but also including a good deal of presentation about the area surrounding them) is, however, most remarkable for the many illustrations. I include a list of the authors quoted and of the illustrations presented for your infomation and consideration.
Condition: This vintage book is in remarkably very good condition, especially as its size is a bit overwhelming and probably in many cases (but happily not this one) overcame the strength of the binding. The hard covers are clean and bright and so too, the gilt decorations. There has been a bit of bumping to the corners and spine tips, and actually along the leading edge, but nothing extreme. Inside, there are some lightly penciled notations about the book's price (which no longer apply, sorry!) on the first blank page but those are the only marks I found in the book. The tissue guard to the first plate is foxed; there is one more tissue-guard which has avoided the foxing. The interior pages and plates are generally clean and bright, without toning or foxing. There is a small bookseller's label on the rear endpaper (E. Darrow & Co., of Rochester, NY). The rear board has a patch of finish loss on the upper right-hand corner. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
