McLean served the Hudson's Bay Company in the Ottawa valley, the North West, on the Pacific coast, Hudson Bay and in the Labrador between 1821 and 1845. He was the first white man to traverse the entire Labrador Peninsula, and in so doing he discovered the Grand Falls of the Northwest River. His narrative "one of the classics of wilderness travel", is also an authentic record of the H.B.C. activities after its union with the Northwest Company.
