About this Item
4°. p. 101-137. Later marbled boards. Some pages lightly browned, scattered foxing, else fine. From the Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy. - The first appearence in print of European folklore recounted by Native Americans. Dunn, an Irish lawyer and member of parliament, came to North America around 1797 to study Native American cultures and languages. He was adopted by Miami Chief Tchikanakoa and spent a considerable time in his area. In 1802, he returned to Ireland and read this paper to the Royal Irish Academy. In it, he gives the English translation of two Algonquin tales and the Latin translation of another, judged to be too lewd to be published in English. In addition to these texts, he has very interesting things to say about culture and daily life, and gives some examples of 'Native' poetry on Niagara Falls which he composed himself in Algonkin. Very rare. Seller Inventory # ABE-1710592127308
