A particularly rare copy of the 1889 first printing of the Nursery Alice. Carroll rejected this issue in September 1889, as the "hare" was not printed in the centre of the lower board. Williams, Madan and Green, p. 147. I have placed this copy alongside a copy that was bound later (photo) to show his reason for the rejection. Also noticeable is the toned paper used on the front and rear covers, on which Alice and the hare are printed, on the rejected copy; these copies were also bound with yellow end papers. Macmillan bound all subsequent copies with white end papers. Wear to covers and bumping to the corners, tissue guard missing, as is a small piece of the top corner of the rear end paper. Contents clean with the occasional handling mark. A very good copy of this particularly rare survivor. Seller Inventory # 0143
