Early book of instruction for nurses (assuming them to be women, whose "nature is adapted to nursing & caring for the sick,'') by the Prussian-born daughter of a Methodist minister who followed in her father's footsteps in caring for the needs of the ill & dying, receiving her formal education & becoming on of the first graduates of The Womans' Hospital of the State of Illinois, founded in 1873 on the basis of guidelines established by Florence Nightengale. It was hoped that, as the profession of trained nurse rose in public awareness, it would gain public estimation & cause the "wound-healing fairies" & "old granny nurses" to "fold up their tents like Arabs & quietly steal away" to make room for this new breed of woman. In 135 pages with a General Index + 4 pages of illustrated ads for "Dr. Dickinson's Douche Bed Pan" other products in rear. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing from 1884, this hardcover has deep green cloth-covered boards with black decoration & ruling to front/gilt lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG: extremely clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white & unmarked, with age-appropriate tanning. Modest rubbing to extremities, slightly heavier & with bumping to all corners & both ends of spine. No DJ, as issued.
