OATH FOR JEWISH LANDOWNERS ACT (1723). An Act for explaining and amending an Act of the last Session of Parliament, intituled, An Act to oblige all Persons, being Papists, in that Part of Great Britain called Scotland, and all Persons in Great Britain, refusing or neglecting to take the Oaths appointed for the Security of His Majesty's Person and Government, by several Acts herein mentioned, to Register their Names and Real Estates, and for enlarging the time for taking the said Oaths, and making such Registers, and for allowing farther Time for the Enrolment of Deeds or Wills made by Papists, which have been omitted to be enrolled, pursuant to an Act of the third Year of His Majesty's Reign and also for giving Relief to Protestant Lessees.

Printed on paper with interesting Fool's Cap watermark (best visible on general title leaf). Neatly extracted from a bound volume. In order to place a check upon Jacobites (most of whom were Roman Catholics), it was enacted in 1722 that all persons owning land who refused or neglected to take the oaths appointed for the security of the King and government (which included the oath of abjuration ending with the words - upon the true faith of a Christian -) were to register their names and real estates before a fixed day. Failing to do so resulted in the forfeiture of their lands. This amended legislation included a clause that allowed Jewish landowners to take the oath of abjuration and omit the words - upon the true faith of a Christian - which were so religiously offensive to them. Also included here is a copy of the original Act in question that was amended (entitled: An Act to oblige all Persons, being Papists, in that Part of Great Britain called Scotland, and all Persons in Great Britain, refusing or neglecting to take the Oaths appointed for the Security of His Majesty's Person and Government, by several Acts herein mentioned, to Register their Names and Real Estates; 9 George I, Chapter 24; 1723).
