About this Item
Attractive investment prospectus for the reopening and modernization of silver mining operations in Ophir, Nye County, Nevada. Silver was discovered in 1863 and by 1867, almost 400 people were living in the desolate canyon. Mining gradually declined until 1872 when a rich new ore body was discovered. The Twin River Mining Company began operating the Murphy Mine in 1874 and produced steadily until the 1890s when all prospecting in the region ceased. This booklet precedes the 1917 resurgence of mining activities in Ophir and describes in detail the history of the canyon, the mines, their production, and the company's plan, which included investing in modern mining machinery, extending old drifts and shafts, and the development of water rights in concert with the establishment of a hydroelectric plant. Oblong octavo: 23 p. with illustrations and maps, including the folding "Sketch Map of Nevada and the Southeastern Portion of California" bound in at the front. Original printed tan paper wrappers (9" x 6"), bound with red string. Short closed tear to the folding map; else a fine, fresh example. Housed in the original mailing envelope, which bears the period ink stamp of Ralph R. Landes of Austin, Nevada on the front panel. Scarce, OCLC locates only a single copy at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Seller Inventory # 73802
