First impression of the first UK edition of this posthumous collection. The book first appeared in the USA, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1957. Edited, with an Introduction, by Samuel French Morse. ***Near fine in blue cloth covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp, with just a slight crease to the bottom corner tip of the front board. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. ***In a very good original dustwrapper, which retains the publisher's original printed price of 36s net. The dustwrapper is complete, but there is some splitting along the spine and along the front fold. Some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling. Also some slight loss at the top and tail of the spine. There is no significant fading, even to the spine. The rest of the writing was found scattered through the magazines, anthologies and miscellanies to which Stevens contributed generously and often. Samuel French Morse has supplied an Introduction that should help to dispel the miasma of ill-informed conjecture which has already risen about the solid but somehow mysterious figure of Wallace Stevens.'
