About this Item
Octavo, pp. [1-12] 13-284 [285-288: blank] [note: first two and last two leaves are blanks used as front and rear paste-downs and free endpapers], original decorated light blue cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. A collection of "ghost stories, traditional themes and treatments; Bleiler found these 'somewhat reminiscent of the work of E. F. Benson,' albeit they are rather more archaic and less sophisticated. They also lack his peculiar, and memorable, obsessions, opting instead for more conventional sentiments." - Robert Knowlton. "Five of the stories in Kyffin-Taylor s collection -- "Room Number Ten," "Two Little Red Shoes," "The Wind in the Woods," "Sylvia," and "The Star Inn" -- are hauntings involving reenactments of past violent crimes. The best of these are "Room Number Ten" and "Two Little Red Shoes." In the former, Peter Maxon, a writer, becomes a reluctant participant in an attempt by his friends to exorcise the spirit of an evil nurse who poisoned one of her patients and passed on a cursed emerald ring to her descendants. In the former, a kindly woman, whose hobby is investigating abandoned houses, encounters the ghosts of two children who were tortured to death by their uncle and his son in order to steal the children s inheritance. However, the most accomplished stories in FROM OUT OF THE SILENCE are "Outside the House" and "The Twins" (Boyd White). Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 975. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 131. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 470. Bleiler (1978), p. 117. Reginald 08507. Hairline crack along inner front hinge, pulpy text paper tanned, a very good copy in good pictorial 2/6 dust jacket (illustrated by George Kewley) with wear along top and bottom edges, several short at edges, mainly at folds, chips from spine ends, several creases at top and bottom edges of rear panel, and some dust soiling to rear panel. A reasonably decent copy of a cheap production printed on poor quality paper. (#172175). Seller Inventory # 172175
